History

Artesãos do Corpo/Theatre-Dance is a theatre-dance company guided by Rudolf Laban's principles and researches not only an aesthetic language, but also an artistic working process which has as sources of inspiration for its projects and performances the body and the search for a democratic dialogue between different forms of art (dance, theatre, plastic arts, performance, music, poetry).

It was founded in 1999 by sociologist, ballerina and actress Mirtes Calheiros, and its made up by actors/dancers and stage arts researchers. Its goal is to provoke audience sensitivity and consciousness towards social and cultural matters in contemporary world. Since August 2001, the company keeps its own studio in a São Paulo neighborhood called Santa Cecília. There rehearsals, artistic research and social projects take place.

The plays Urban Spasms, Mrykaok, Valparaiso, Studies about Desire and Small Room for Being Myself are part of our repertoire. We also have performances/installations/interventions for urban spaces: Urban Glance (slow), Theatre at Window and Paulista Gallery.

Located on the boundaries between Dance, Theatre and Performing Arts, the group understands that establishing  this language is possible by means of continuous research with the Body as its unchangeable axis, because it is the center of human action, source of all knowledge before symbolic thinking.

Company's training follows a strict routine including Yoga , do-ho, theatre-dance classes and stage exercises developed from the slowest possible movements which intention is to refine movement and to reach the essential gesture, accurate and poetic. Constant research of Rudolf Lanban's principles expressive possibilities also is part of our daily routine.
